I'm grateful for this article. I've been struggling with depression myself as of late. I'm glad to have som practical suggestions for how to combat it. Also, it's nice to know I'm not alone. Thank you.

Please stay on this topic. This whole dopamine/bodily reward system, this is not the first time you've shared on this topic, is eye opening. It puts a tangible path in what feels like absolute darkness. I may have more comments later as I don't even have toime to read it all. Thank you.

Glad you're getting something out of these articles, Mike. I think they're really important for a lot of people who need a different way to look at depression.

Definitely agree with rising and falling with the Sun--in the summer. Early mornings (5 a.m.) are glorious where I live. And by the time 9:30 p.m. sunset hits (after a hard day's work), I'm ready for a good sleep. (Kinda tricky in winter with 5 p.m. sunset.) As for cold showers—never! My shower has two main shower heads and two body sprays. This "carwash" acts as my whirlpool tub to relieve body aches, without submersing in hot water with no circulating air (which exhausts me and raises blood pressure). Combined with a tankless water heater (highly recommended), the shower is a sanctuary. As for depression, hard work is a great antidote as it always provides satisfaction rewards. Stay focused on goals and stay the course.

I grew up in northern British Columbia where winter days were short and summer days were long, so rising and going to sleep precisely with the Sun wasn't feasible, but the idea is to be on a roughly early morning / early night schedule.

I'm holding the cold water immersion trick in reserve in case I ever hit a really rough patch in my depression recovery, but as a daily thing... no. I hear you about the benefits of hot showers. With the amount of weight lifting I do, I need the heat for recovery.

Excellent article, I’d forgotten about the days when (in my 30’s) I’d get up at 4:30 for an 1-1/2 hour workout, before having breakfast and heading to work at 7:00. As the breadwinner in a family of 2 girls, the youngest having special needs arising from Down Syndrome, Autism, and being Visually Impaired (due to congenital cataracts surgery at 7 months of age)… the pressures were great, but taking the time for physical activity was actually very therapeutic. Something I need to revisit in my retirement. Thank you Sarah.
