Finding yourself

The spiritual theme for this week is finding yourself.

One of my favorite songs growing up was “Tom Sawyer” by the Canadian prog-rock band, Rush. I listened to it over and over. The lyric that most stood out to me was

No, his mind is not for rent
To any god or government

The lyricist, Neil Peart (who was also Rush’s drummer) was influenced by the Objectivist philosopher Ayn Rand, and it shows. I, too, was influenced by Ayn Rand growing up atheist in Canada, and I loved that lyric. But it would come back to haunt me years later when I was thinking about converting to Christianity.
