Last-minute Lord

The times in my life when I have sunk low, when everything seems to have gone sideways, I often feel as though God is at his furthest from me.

“Why, God, have you forsaken me?”

I don’t always feel like this in low moments. When I’ve faced death—my own near-death experiences and the loss of people who were dear to me—I felt God’s soothing presence every time.

But during other low times, it feels like God is a million miles away. And, seeing no end to my tribulations in sight, I start to descend into despair.

It’s probably my worst fault, because I should know better by now.

The last few months have been rough. I won’t go into detail, but a number of things converged into a desperate perfect storm, and as far as I could tell, they would go on forever or until they managed to snuff me out.

And at precisely the moment I thought I was going to have a heart attack from the stress, I experienced the release when unexpected things happened that changed the course of two of my biggest problems.
